If you are running Windows 7 RTM, with Windows Live Essentials, you may find it is impossible to minimize the Windows Live Messenger to the taskbar with a tray icon. Once you open the Windows Live Messenger, there will be two buttons on the taskbar. If you close both of them, then the WLM will be closed as well.
But, everything that has a problem has a solution. And this time it's quite easy.
* Open the Windows Live Messenger folder
* Right-click on the shortcut and hit properties
* In the Compatibility tab, check "Run this program under compatible mode as Vista SP2 "
